In Italy, the data of tens of thousands of tourists has been hacked through hotel reservation systems. The data is now being offered for sale.
The hacker group, called Mydocs, has been offering approximately 70,000 documents for sale online for several days, according to police. The victims are customers of upscale hotels in cities like Venice and Trieste, and on the island of Capri. Documents were also reportedly stolen from a luxury hotel on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
According to Italian police, hackers have been breaking into the reservation systems of several hotels since June. They obtained scans of passports, ID cards, and other documents used by vacationers and businesspeople at reception. These are now being offered for sale on the dark web, for prices ranging from €800 to €10,000.
According to a report in the daily Corriere del Veneto, the four-star hotel “Ca’ dei Conti” in Venice was among those affected by the data theft. 38,000 documents were reportedly stolen.
