Tech billionaire Elon Musk will have to answer in court for his attacks on OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
The world’s richest man had asked to dismiss OpenAI’s accusations against him, but a US district judge denied his request.
The judge’s decision is the latest development in Musk’s year-long legal battle with OpenAI. The company accuses Musk of a “years-long campaign of intimidation” through lawsuits, social media posts and press statements. Musk owns his own AI company (xAI) and X, formerly Twitter.
Elon Musk also co-founded OpenAI in 2015. But he believes the company has broken its promise by trying to transform itself into a profitable enterprise. Musk has therefore initiated legal proceedings against two of OpenAI’s founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman.
OpenAI believes Musk is “relentlessly” trying to harm the company. The judge hasn’t yet addressed the merits of that counterclaim, but has now ruled that the counterclaim filed in April is legally sufficient to proceed. A trial in federal court in Oakland, California, on the harassment claim is scheduled for March of next year.
